Time for some more hott decklist action.
This week im gonna be looking at what im currently running in standard.
not that ive played much standard of late. but theres a few events upcoming in January i've got my eye on (for example)
Since Innistrad hit, i've been mucking about with 3 colour control decks of various colour wedges that look to stall the early game and hit some combination of big finishers or planeswalkers, thats just how i roll.
Solar flare and bant 'walker blade were the two i spent most time on, solar flare felt too slow and clunky, bant blade was interesting and had potential but the meta game shifting towards aggressive white based token strategies really left that deck behind, it struggled a bit with regards to spot removal.
So i went back to the drawing board, what did i want? i wanted a control deck with some walkers and finishers that was able to wipe a board but also be able to deal with a steady stream of little evasive dudes the likes of which moorland haunt provides.
Grixis seemed perfect for this, red gives you slagstorm, blue gives you permission and draw, black gives you spot removal. And this wedge let you use forbidden alchemy to filter through your deck while also providing plenty of ammunition for grim lavamancer. My first instinct was to run a full grip of snapcasters and brimstone volleys as well, they very quickly got dropped, in several hours of testing, i dont recall once getting to live the dream as i'd invisioned, so why pay 3 mana for 3 damage?
Anyway, with a few tweakings here and there this is what im currently running in my 60
4 island
5 swamp
6 mountain
1 stensia bloodhall
3 dragonskull summit
3 drowned catacomb
3 sulfur falls
3 grim lavamancer
3 snapcaster mage
2 olivia voldaren
1 inferno titan
1 wurmcoil engine
2 liliana of the veil
2 chandra, the firebrand
4 forbidden alchemy
2 gitaxian probe
2 doom blade
1 sorin's vengeance
1 dissipate
2 slagstorm
4 mana leak
3 desperate ravings
1 devil's play
1 gut shot
this may change before January, i have been running 3-4 maindeck despise, but i found it awkward not often being able to play it turn 1 (i suppose i really should be using scars duals) so ive cut it for now, but it may leave me with too few answers to certain cards and strategies. im also short a sideboard.
bleugh. i really need to start gauntleting!
