It's a strategy I'd picked up the cards for to build metalworker.dec. but that had turned out to be a disaster, so i quickly shelved those cards, but what he was saying made a whole lot of sense to me, if you can shut down the CMC 1's, you shut off a lot of cards in a lot of decks right now.
I can also get on board with his planeswalking love, so what am i looking to build?
some sort of deck that drops turn 1 chalice for 1 and then hits a planeswalker to win with. So i got thinking...
But I don't want that walker to be Jace. I want to make dudes and swing.
So the options are as follows:
M12 Primal Garruk seems the 'best' one, but triple green in an ancient tomb deck seems ambitious. as does 5 mana in legacy. So, no. You're out.
Elspeth, knight errant? she's undeniably top drawer, but double white? and isnt heavy white turning this into stax? Lets move on.
Garruk 1.0? good again, but double colour and he loses loyalty for making dudes. Another no.
so...Garruk Relentless?
Yeah, why not?
So my first instinct was to just jam this strategy into the UG zenith deck i'd half finished, but Ant quickly poopooed that, he's right, why are you playing blue if youre not letting yourself run brainstorm? (although the rogue in me really wanted to cast accumulated knowledge in a format).
I did at first consider a mono green build, but that just looked bad, so this was my next thought:
4 ancient tomb
2 city of traitors
6 relevant fetches
3 savannah
3 wasteland
1 karakas
1 horizon canopy
1 dryad arbor
3 forest
2 plains
3 knight of the reliquary
2 qasali pridemage
4 stoneforge mystic
2 tarmogoyf
1 kitchen finks
1 birds of paradise
1 eternal witness
1 thrun
4 chalice o the void
4 mox diamond
2 garruk relentless
2 elspeth, knight errant
3 green zenith
1 batterskull
1 sword of feast and famine
1 Umezawa's jitte
It goldfished pretty hilariously, turn 1 chalice for 1, turn 2 garruk relentless, turn 3 elspeth? hott! But yes, it does look a bit like maverick, which i have been pretty down on as an archetype. But the 2 mana lands and chalice add a different dimension i think.
Ant's initial suggestion i received in response was a bit more focused and less toolboxy. Dropping the zenith package all together.
26 land
4 mox diamond
4 stoneforge mystic
3 knight of the reliquary
3 thrun, last troll
2 sylvan library
4 chalice of the void
4 trinisphere
3 garruk relentless
2 elspeth 2.0
2 life from the loam
1 batterskull
1 sword
1 jitte
Not sure about elspeth tirel over knight errant, but i suppose the life gain could be handy. and she does make 3 dudes right off the bat. Sylvan library i can get right behind though, i should have thought of that myself.
I'll be sleeving both up and giving them a run out in testing soon.
I misread the decklist you sent me and thought Elspeth Tirel was your idea :D I think both are worth trying out, she does protect herself better but I can see Elspeth 1.0 being great at closing out games by making Thrun / Knights fly.
ReplyDeleteI played almost this entire list at Romford one week. I opted for Trinisphere and Armagedon in the planeswalker slots. It felt like it was lacking something. The third and fourth CotV and Mox top decks were frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI guess thats always going to be a problem in a deck running moxen and/or chalices, and its compounded if you arent playing blue so you can filter them away, did your version also run sylvan library? i'd hope that would help, although only running 2 library makes that optimistic i guess.
